Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about ToolStack and our free browser tools.
There is no catch. ToolStack is completely free to use with no feature limits, no daily caps, and no premium tier. All tools are available in full to every visitor. The site is supported by non-intrusive display advertising. We do not sell data, we do not require account creation, and we do not collect personal information. Every tool runs entirely in your browser — we never receive your files, your tax information, or anything else you enter.
Yes — completely. All ToolStack tools are client-side only, meaning all processing happens in your browser on your device. When you compress a PDF, the file never leaves your computer. When you calculate your taxes, your income figures are never transmitted anywhere. We have no backend server receiving user data. You can verify this yourself by disconnecting from the internet after the page loads — all tools continue to work perfectly because they don't need a server connection.
The calculator uses the actual 2024 IRS federal income tax brackets and the correct self-employment tax rate of 15.3% (12.4% Social Security + 2.9% Medicare) applied to 92.35% of net self-employment income, as per IRS rules. It also models the self-employment tax deduction (50% of SE tax deducted from gross income), the standard deduction for all filing statuses, and the Section 199A QBI deduction. State tax is estimated using a flat rate — your actual state tax may differ if your state uses progressive brackets. Always consult a CPA or tax professional for advice specific to your situation.
Yes. All ToolStack tools are fully responsive and work on smartphones and tablets. The PDF Compressor may be slower on older mobile devices for large files since it uses client-side rendering, but all other tools work instantly on any modern mobile browser. No app download is required.
The PDF Compressor works by rendering each page of your PDF as an image at a reduced resolution, then rebuilding the PDF from those images. This is how client-side PDF compression works without a server. The Screen setting (72 DPI) gives the smallest file but lower image quality — suitable for email attachments or web viewing. Balanced (150 DPI) is the best choice for most uses. Print (300 DPI) preserves high quality with lighter compression. For text-heavy documents where file size is less important than text sharpness, choose Print quality.
Self-employment (SE) tax is the Social Security and Medicare contribution that self-employed workers pay directly to the IRS. When you're employed by a company, your employer pays half (7.65%) and you pay half (7.65%) through payroll deductions. When you're self-employed, you pay both halves — the full 15.3%. It's applied to 92.35% of your net self-employment income (the 7.65% reduction reflects the fact that employers can deduct their share). The good news: you can deduct 50% of your SE tax from your gross income when calculating your federal income tax, which partially offsets the cost.
About ToolStack
ToolStack was built out of frustration with bloated, ad-heavy online tools that demand sign-ups, impose daily limits, and upload your private files to remote servers. We believe a PDF compressor should compress your PDF. A tax calculator should calculate your tax. No account. No upload. No nonsense.
Every tool in the suite runs entirely in the browser. There is no backend, no database, and no user accounts — by design. This makes the tools faster, more private, and more reliable than server-dependent alternatives.
ToolStack is independently built and maintained. We are not affiliated with any tax authority, government agency, financial institution, or software company.
